Artist - Michelle Weaver

TAS Artist Profile: Michelle Weaver

Michelle Weaver has been creating art for just over three years and although she studied art in Grade 12, and took an art elective subject whilst studying her education degree, she has no formal training. For the last 30 plus years, Michelle has directed and produced children’s theatre productions and feels that this creative avenue has provided her with a good understanding of the concept of layering and composition. She feels that directing a play is very similar to creating a painting through utilising elements such as scene setting, telling a story, slowly building up layers of quality and style, and finding truth in the presentation. Growing up in a family of artists and art aficionados, has also provided Michelle with some background knowledge and plenty of advice.

Returning to Townsville after seven years away, has inspired Michelle to paint her hometown and she now enjoys representing the brilliant tropical sunlight and the locals enjoying the lifestyle here. Over the last three years, painting and drawing quickly became an obsession and Michelle loves to paint animals, (particularly dogs) and watch the joy on her client’s face when she hands over a finished portrait.

Michelle works in gouache, oils, and coloured pencil. She was recently awarded the Highly Commended Award for Works on Paper at the 2023 68th TAS Art Awards for Fig on the Strand.
